Vuyani Matibiri is a Zimbabwean British designer and artist based in north London.
His practice is informed by storytelling and narrative through objects and spaces.
His identity as a Zimbabwean immigrant informs his personal work, merging his dual western and African identities to explore and investigate pre-colonial African craft utilising modern manufacturing techniques. Storytelling is at the heart of these projects as he explores the cultural values of the societies in which these objects existed with research-based approach. Vuyani’s work attempts to shine a light on the craft, art and ritual of the so called “dark continent” to create spaces for people to live and exist amongst indigenous culture beyond glass boxes in museums.
His commercial practice is centred around brand narrative, combining his storytelling sensibilities with strategic business goals to develop engaging stories. His work at louis Vuitton focused on finding new ways to reinterpret the brands heritage in the idea of “travel” and savoir faire sensibilities to design stunning sets, installations and objects for the brands Maison stores around the world.
